Installing the Autel Home Charger

Installing the Autel Home MaxiCharger was straightforward, especially compared to the previous Tesla charger I had. The MaxiCharger has a clean design which makes installation easier.

I did have to run some additional electrical wiring to the new charger location. The previous wiring was oversized at #3, so I reduced it down to a #6 wire size, which is recommended for the 50 amp MaxiCharger.

Install requires removing the front panel, which has just one ribbon cable connecting it to the main board. This allows feeding the wiring through the back opening and provides better access.

Heavy duty drywall anchors are needed since there wasn’t a stud available where I mounted it. With the backplate secured, I was ready to install the MaxiCharger.

The wiring connections are clearly labeled, so it was straightforward to connect the 50 amp 240V supply. Just be very careful to connect the wires correctly.

Overall, the install was simpler than expected, though an electrician is recommended if you aren’t comfortable working with 240V wiring. The MaxiCharger was designed for easy installation while delivering fast Level 2 EV charging.

Mounting the Charger on the Wall

With the wall mount plate positioned in the proper place, I used some heavy duty drywall anchors to secure it since I didn’t have a stud available. Drywall anchors are crucial for a sturdy install when you don’t have the option of screwing directly into a stud.

I drilled holes into the drywall and inserted the anchors, making sure they were flush with the wall surface. Then I screwed the backplate directly into the anchors. The heavy duty drywall anchors I selected are rated to hold a significant amount of weight, ensuring a secure mount for the charger.

Properly mounting the backplate is one of the most important steps during the installation process. Taking the time to use quality drywall anchors and securing the backplate tightly leads to a finished install that will hold up for years of regular use. The backplate houses all the wiring and bears the weight of the charger, so mounting it securely is crucial.

Connecting the Wires

Bringing the wires into the charger requires care and precision. I had to be very careful when plugging the wires into the right place on the main board inside the charger. One wrong connection could fry the electronics.

The charger includes a current selector that allows you to set the max amperage pulled from your home’s electrical system. For a 50 amp circuit, I set the selector to the number 6 position. This allows the Autel Home charger to draw the full 50 amps from my home’s electrical system and charge at the fastest rate. Make sure to use the included set screw on the bottom of the charger to hold it securely to the wall after setting the selector.

With the wires neatly connected and current selector properly set, I was ready to turn on the power and see if the Autel Home charger would function as expected.

Reassembling the Charger

After connecting the wires, it was time to reassemble the charger. I started by carefully putting the front plate back on. There are a ton of small screws that hold the front plate in place, so this part took some time and focus to avoid losing any screws. I was glad to see that Autel included a few extra screws in the box as a nice backup in case any did get lost during this step.

Having those spare parts provided an extra peace of mind during the reassembly. Once I got the front plate lined up properly, I proceeded to insert and tighten each screw one by one until the front plate was fully secured. With the front plate back on, the charger was almost ready to be mounted and powered on. The small details like including extra parts make a big difference during installation.

Connecting to the Autel App

The Autel Home app lets you control and monitor your charger from anywhere. I downloaded the app on my iPhone and set up an account by agreeing to the terms and registering with my email. Autel sent a verification code to confirm my email, which I entered into the registration form.

Next, I had to connect my phone to the charger via Bluetooth. First I scanned the PIN code on the side of the charging unit. Then I entered another PIN code provided in the instruction manual. These extra steps ensure your charger is securely connected only to you.

After linking via Bluetooth, I connected the charger to my home WiFi network. This lets me access it from anywhere, not just when Bluetooth is in range. In the app, I also entered my electricity rate information so I can see metrics on how much it costs to charge my Audi.

The Autel app provides tons of data on your charging sessions. I love that it lets me track my electric vehicle charging costs and usage.

Charging the Audi e-tron

I was eager to see how fast the Autel Home MaxiCharger could charge up my Audi e-tron. The charger comes with a 25 foot cable that feels very sturdy and well-made. I plugged it into the charging port on my 2019 Audi e-tron and waited to see the results.

After a moment, the app showed a green indicator that the EV was connected and starting to charge. Glancing at the dash in my Audi, I could see it was receiving charge from the Autel charger as well.

Inside the Autel app, I’m able to monitor all kinds of helpful charging data in real-time. It shows the cost per hour based on my electricity rates, the power and duration of the charge session, and the amount of energy it’s transferring to my Audi. There are graphs and metrics galore for data nerds who want to track every aspect of their EV charging.

Overall, I’m thrilled to have the Autel Home MaxiCharger in my garage. It’s delivering fast level 2 charging speeds to my Audi e-tron, which translates to gaining back 37-40 miles of range per hour. The app provides unparalleled insights into my charging sessions and costs. I’d highly recommend this charger to any EV owner looking for a premium home charging solution.

Review of Autel Home Charger

I was very impressed with the Autel Home MaxiCharger overall. The installation process was straightforward, even for someone without much electrical experience like myself. The included instructions were clear, and Autel provides extra screws and parts just in case.

Connecting the charger to the Autel app was a breeze. The app walks you through securing the connection via Bluetooth first, then connecting to WiFi for remote access from anywhere. The app provides tons of helpful charging data, like electricity cost, duration, energy usage, and more.

The charging speed delivered range pretty quickly to my Audi e-tron – about 37-40 miles per hour. The 25 ft cable easily reaches my vehicle in the garage, so no issues there.

A major pro is that this charger can be installed indoors or outdoors. The durable construction means it’s built to withstand the elements if mounted outside. But it looks sleek enough to install in the garage or carport as well.

Overall, the Autel Home MaxiCharger delivers premium features and fast charging speeds in a user-friendly package. I’d highly recommend it to any EV owner looking for a robust home charging solution.
